High unemployment rates and population density are creating a distinct lack of opportunity for young Uzbek men. Many of these Uzbeks (some estimates ranging up to 2,000,000) are living abroad for work or to look for work. Keep in mind that half of Uzbekistan’s population is below the age of twenty-five. That’s a lot of unemployed young people looking at a (corrupt and authoritarian) system and feeling angry and disempowered and the only alternative to that system is jihad because there is no realistic political opposition left.
