A comment from someone in the 44th Administration, about career civil service staff

Vivian Paulette - As I continue to digest the end of this...:

As I continue to digest the end of this administration and how brightly it shined, I want to give a separate, and special, thank you to the dedicated career public servants who will continue to work on behalf of the American people. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
Your work and tireless efforts are often overlooked by the shiny, bright toys (fancy people// but not all of them) who join for short periods of time and spend much of it patting themselves on the back or complaining about how hard the work is and posting pictures of themselves as if they were going to war. I hear your murmurs sometimes, I see the stares..it's soul crushing. People often forget that without our career civil service the government would actually be unable to carry out and fulfill the basic responsibilities necessary to function. You catch a lot of grief because someone comes in, bosses you around, then leaves a few months or short years later with primary organizational functions having remained almost entirely the same.
But the shiny new ideas, those are the stories that get told by comms teams intent on selling -- quite often (and with few exceptions) -- the laziest and shallowest version of a story. Then they go to conferences and talk about how hard and broken everything is and somehow it's your fault because it wasn't already fixed. It's an easy and cheap shot. You get overlooked during the story telling portion, but have all of the cleanup to do when a story paints your work negatively. You know it's not entirely wrong but, to be fair, there's very little digging into all of the steps over the many, many years that were required to launch this new thing or some slightly newer version of some old thing. Because that's what sells in a world drowned out by noise. It's a disservice to you, the backbone of American government -- those who are entrusted with implementing the democracy we cherish -- to not see your value and to tell that story every single day.
The work of public servants is tragically thankless. You don't come in for a short stint with the expectation of a picture with the president or an interview for a documentary or a new headshot. You show up every single day, regardless of who holds the office of the president, and you do your best to serve the people. You serve everyone despite the list of endless constraints. You try to keep up with the private sector despite incentives to be risk-averse. You show up and you do it anyway and ignore the long list of people telling you that your way of doing it is wrong.
I know this because on many occasions I have been the person described above. I'm sorry that it often takes a full administration to cycle before the "new people" fully digest the enormity of steering America. She's a huge ship, and even the tiniest miscalculation can set you off-course in the most catastrophic of ways.
If we knew this coming in, perhaps our ability to find balance and common ground would come much sooner. Perhaps, we could spend more time understanding and *building and improving from* instead of insisting on tearing down in order to rebuild. We'd get to the solution sooner.
As this administration comes to an end, and folks begin to cycle in while others cycle out: Thank you, career civil servants, for keeping America's lights on. πŸ•―

Vietnam: The War That Killed Trust - The New York Times

Vietnam: The War That Killed Trust - The New York Times: "I live near Seattle, hardly Donald J. Trump territory. Most of my friends cynically deride Mr. Trump’s slogan, Make America Great Again, citing all that was wrong in the olden days. Indeed, it wasn’t paradise, particularly for minorities. But there’s some truth to it. We were greater then. It was the war — not liberalism, not immigration, not globalization — that changed us.

The Greatest Civilisation Ever Forgotten? | History Today

The Greatest Civilisation Ever Forgotten? | History Today: "Why does the Indus civilisation offer no definite evidence of warfare, in the form of defensive fortifications, metal weapons and warriors: a situation without parallel in war-addicted ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt and China? Was the Indus religion the origin of Hinduism? Or is the apparent resemblance of some Indus seal iconography and practices to much later Hindu iconography and practices, such as the worship of the god Shiva and the caste system, based on wishful thinking? Does its seeming austerity have any relationship with Buddhism? Is the Indus language that is written in the script (assuming only a single language) related to still-existing Indian languages, such as the Dravidian languages of south India or the Sanskrit language of north India? Lastly, why did the civilisation decline after about 1900 BC and why did it leave no trace in the historical record? The characters of the script seem to have become indecipherable almost 4,000 years ago with the civilisation’s decline."

The Captive Aliens Who Remain Our Shame | by Annette Gordon-Reed | The New York Review of Books

The Captive Aliens Who Remain Our Shame | by Annette Gordon-Reed | The New York Review of Books: "Parkinson insists that “the most important two words in the Declaration are not about equality or happiness.” The most important words are “he” and “we,” speaking of King George and the American people, the opposing forces to which the common cause addressed itself. But that is true only if the Declaration is, as some originalists and textualists say of the United States Constitution, a “dead” thing that can only bear the meaning given by the people who wrote it, and we can never move beyond their intentions—and their limitations.

coldandpain comments on Trump Calls NATO Obsolete and Dismisses EU in German Interview

coldandpain comments on Trump Calls NATO Obsolete and Dismisses EU in German Interview:

Europe suffered a continentwide trauma during ww2. We were on the brink of loosing to first one dictator, then an other. And it happened a mere 20 years after another great war left us desolate. The war left countries, multiple nations in ruins. We gazed into the abyss. When the americans lent us their support, it was as important morally as it was materially. We forged bonds with american soldiers that came to us, we forged bonds with americans when we were sent to them (American hosted numerous training camps throughout the country for occupied nations' soldiers). We already had a very large population in America from emmigration.

It created an air of thankfullness and loyalty. "They stood by us. If ever they come under assault, we will stand by them". People fell in love with fascinating parts of the american culture. American GI's introduced European children to their first tastes of chocolate, bubble gum and Coca Cola. The result is seen throughout Europe today. We are as close to America as you can get. We often are critical of you, we disagree on many things, but we love you for the same differences, and in so many ways we are the same. There are veteran car clubs, dance clubs and football fan associations that live for american products, culture and history. You permeate so many parts of our culture. Moral values are largely intertwined. We share the same music, movies and even foods.

When you inject all of this into our NATO relationship, and our trade relations, there is a very deep sense of loyalty and partnership. We give american companies preferential treatment, we buy more american weapons for our armies, we trade with you quite frequently even where buying elsewhere would be a better deal. America constantly wins where she should otherwise have lost if the only thing that mattered was lowest price and realpolitik.

commiespaceinvader comments on People don't stop hating over night. What was life in Germany like for Jewish, handicapped, gays after WWII?: "
In the last camp liberated, the Ebensee camp, US soldiers came to face inmates who had been forced to use their frozen comrades bodies' as mattresses and were there also had been cases of cannibalism in the last weeks of the war. The shock was profound. So was the logistical challenge of providing thousands of people with help.
Under this impression, the first aid given was often food and very basic medical care in order to ensure the survival of as many prisoners as possible. Especially the troops that liberated camps often made it their first priority to give food to the liberated prisoners, sometimes with dire consequences. The body of a person who has been on a starvation diet for a long time is not able to immediately process solid food for some time.

A considerable number of people died right after liberation after they had been given army rations by the liberating troops simply because their bodies went into shock from the sugar, fat etc. Only with the arrival of medical personnel shortly after liberation, did this practice cease in many camps and a proper diet to nurse prisoners back to health could be instituted."

monorail_pilot comments on "All talk, no action" John Lewis was arrested at least 45 times in the fight for Civil Rights. Here are his mugshots.: "We cannot, and must not, as a society, return to a time where it is generally acceptable to treat a person differently due to the color of their skin. We have, in this election, let this horrible vestige of our past crawl out from the shadowy corner of our society. We now have shown this disgraceful segment of the society, that they are free to tear down and marginalize the leaders who rightly put that segment into the shadows, and by proxy, tear down the gains those people had won. And we did it by legitimizing all sorts of disgusting thoughts and ideas that were long cast off and scorned in the public eye by euphemising them as locker room talk and other silly ideas that basically said those of you with horrible and disgusting ideas can now spread them. Don't worry if you get called out on it, just claim you only act that way in private situations, so it's totally ok."

ezra_sinclair comments on IMA Formerly well off drug dealer who has been shot, stabbed and committed for mental illness. I am now vehemently against violence. AMA:

Everything you do to other human beings, you do to your own humanity, if you hurt other people, you tell yourself that what you share with others, that common humanity, is not valuable, do that enough and you will kill things that you will spend years trying to get back. You will always be okay, the sun will always rise in the morning, never live life from a place of anger or contempt. Don't wait until a problem gets unbearable to ask for help. It's true that you should treat others the way you want to be treated...
but it's also true you should never say things to yourself you wouldn't say to others. People say mean and ugly and nasty things to themselves that they would never say to others, because they are not mean, ugly or nasty people, they just don't know how to afford themselves the same kindness.

DongMy comments on All this fake news...

DongMy comments on All this fake news...:

The tl;dr of both sources is that modern propaganda works by getting you to believe nothing. It's like lowering the defenses of your immune system. If they can get you to believe that all the news is propaganda, then all of a sudden propaganda from foreign-controlled state media or sourceless loony toon rants from domestic kooks, are all on an equal playing field with real investigative journalism. If everything is fake, your news consumption is just a dietary choice. And it's different messages for different audiences - carefully tailored. To one audience they say all news is fake, to those who are on their way to conversion they say "Trust only these sources." To those who might be open to skepticism, they just say "Hey isn't it troubling that the media is a business?"

‘You Focus on the Good’: Women Who Voted for Trump, in Their Own Words - The New York Times

‘You Focus on the Good’: Women Who Voted for Trump, in Their Own Words - The New York Times: "
When Trump became my only choice, I felt he was the lesser of two evils. I had major issues with Hillary as far as ethics was concerned. It seems she feels that she is above the law and nothing ever seems to stick. I didn’t particularly like everything he was saying as far as building a wall, and doing this to immigrants. I looked at that more as bravado, his audience needed that to get the applause.

But there are allegations about killing people who get in her way — Vince Foster, people like that. Someone who has a big bravado is not as concerning to me as someone who might kill people who get in her way."

The Stunning Elbphilharmonie Is What Happens When Algorithms Design a Concert Hall | WIRED

The Stunning Elbphilharmonie Is What Happens When Algorithms Design a Concert Hall | WIRED: "The 10,000 panels feature one million “cells”—little divots that look like someone used a seashell to carve out a chunk of material. These cells, which range anywhere from four to 16 centimeters across, are designed to shape sound within the auditorium. As Koren explains it, when sound waves hit a panel, the uneven surface either absorbs or scatters them. No two panels absorb or scatter sound waves alike, but together they create a balanced reverberation across the entire auditorium. This technique has been used for centuries (most famously with Vienna’s Musikverein, whose ornate, neoclassical detailing creates the same diffusion effect), but the Elbphilharmonie does it in an entirely new, visually arresting way.

The Trump Cabinet’s Good Opening Week - WSJ

The Trump Cabinet’s Good Opening Week - WSJ: "Mr. Obama’s has not been a successful presidency. In foreign affairs his two terms, added to George W. Bush’s two terms, produced 16 years of unsuccess—an entire generation. Richard Haass, head of the Council on Foreign Relations, put it gently in conversation this week: Mr. Bush tried to do too much, which was unrealistic; Mr. Obama attempted too little, its own, perhaps more consequential unrealism.

One person left this note on my Facebook timeline: “I was shocked to find that you are in fact not the fox in the henhouse. For that I do apologize. As penance I have gone to several sites that have posted the untrue information about you and corrected them. I doubt it will do a bit of good. I am terribly sorry and wanted you to know that not all Trump supporters are mindless and that the real truth does matter. Hope this mess gets cleared up real soon. God bless.”

Open Letter of Apology : loseit

Open Letter of Apology : loseit:

I'm 289 pounds.
And now, in this same subreddit where my old account, that was so toxic that I've since taken it down, was banned from, I'm coming for help.
Call it karma, it probably is. I don't know if you believe in a God, but I do, I think he did this intentionally because of the unchristian way I acted towards others. I was sick, I was nasty, I was the disgusting one.
I know you fight. I know you're not weak, you're the opposite, you're the strongest kind of person out there.
I am sorry for every look I every shot you. For anything I ever muttered under my breath. For every time I changed seats because of you. For the names I called you in school and for the dance I wouldn't be your date for. You deserved better than me anyways.
I apologize to each and every one of you who has ever been unfortunate enough to cross paths with a volatile prick like me who sought to make your personal private health concerns their business.
As devastating as this has been for me, a 6'2 guy with a deep voice, shoulder length beard and tattoos, I cannot comprehend how difficult and damaging it was for anyone who has to cope with this publicly accepted, encouraged even, abuse, as an innocent defenseless child.
I know now that you are so much more than your weight. I'm the weak one. I'm the wrong one. Now I'm the fat one.

Chip's New Year's Revelation - Magnolia Market:

If there is any hope for all of us to move forward, to heal and to grow – we have got to learn to engage people who are different from us with dignity and with love. Joanna and I have personal convictions. One of them is this: we care about you for the simple fact that you are a person, our neighbor on planet earth. It’s not about what color your skin is, how much money you have in the bank, your political affiliation, sexual orientation, gender, nationality or faith. That’s all fascinating, but it cannot add or take away from the reality that we’re already pulling for you. We are not about to get in the nasty business of throwing stones at each other, don’t ask us to cause we won’t play that way.
In 2017: We have decided to change the conversation.

The Cement Mixer Space Capsule of Winganon | Amusing Planet: "The landmark came into being by a happy accident when a concrete-filled cement mixer truck, which was on its way to help build the bridge over Oologah Lake, rolled over here in 1959. By the time a tow truck arrived to haul the cement truck away, all of the cement had hardened inside the mixer. Unable to handle the extra weight, the crew decided to haul only the truck and come back for the detached mixer later, which never happened. Eventually the locals discovered the relic, and the mixer became an easy target for anyone with spray paint.

Married lesbian couple to lead prominent D.C. Baptist church - The Washington Post:

Calvary Baptist Church, a progressive Baptist landmark in the heart of downtown Washington, has named a gay couple as co-pastors.
Sally Sarratt and Maria Swearingen were presented to the congregation during worship services Jan. 8 and are set to begin their new jobs Feb. 26.
A spokeswoman for the congregation said she didn’t know whether a gay couple leading a church was a first for Baptists.
“We look for the best people in the world and that’s who they were,” said Carol Blythe. “We’re very excited.”
