He was the band leader who, with other heroic musicians, had continued to play as the ship went down, providing, even before the Titanic was swallowed by the ocean, the sense that its fate was metaphor. Hartley’s embalmed body, in a coffin with glass panels through which his features were visible, was borne 59 miles through congested Lancashire factory towns to his own home town of Colne.
